Read Genesis 12 before reading this devotional!

“Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord. So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.”

‭‭Genesis‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬-‭9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

As we move through life, there will always be periods of times where we are in transition. Transition occurs even before you were born. Think about it, when your mother was pregnant with you, you started off as an embryo and then you transitioned to a fetus and from a fetus into a baby, and from a baby into a toddler, then a child, then an adolescent, until finally you are an adult.

That is just one example of the transitions we go through and we can get into many more but that would take forever. Today, I want us to focus on the transition when God tells us to move or do something.

What is the definition of transition? According to Google, it is the process, act, or period of changing from one stage, place, or subject to the other. Another word for transition is to shift or move.

Why am I bringing this up? Because like Abram, many times God told us to move and yet we remain stagnant. Now I am guilty of this as well, but God has been showing me the importance of transition.

When we look at the text, God gave Abram a command. The very first verse when He told Abram to get out of his country, from his family, and from the land of your father’s house, to a land that I will show you.

Pay attention the language being used. God didn’t tell Abram to go, He told him to GET OUT. A much stronger connotation. Why? Because there was urgency behind the command in which He was giving Abram. He wanted him to move and move quickly.

A lot of times God gave us a command and we moved slow or not at all. Why is that? Because the transition that He is asking of us requires us to let Him lead and relinquish control. To trust Him. At the end of verse one, He said He would show Abram the land that He wants him to go to. Will you trust God to show you where He wants you to go, even if it doesn’t look right?

I feel as though God is bringing this to my attention because whether your transition in life is God taking you to a new place, going back to school, finding a new job, or something as simple as talking to someone. When He tells us to do something, we ought to do it quickly.

Why quickly? Because the more you delay the more room you leave for destruction and disobedience. Don’t believe me? Let me give you some examples:

Saul disobeyed Gods orders to kill the Amalekites in its entirety and he still preserved what he saw best (1 Samuel 13-15)

Jonah was given a command but he chose to flee. He got caught in a storm and swallowed by a fish. All because he didn’t want to do what God told him to (Jonah 1-2).

A prophet sent by God to Bethel was told not to eat or drink until his return. He was deceived by an old prophet and disobeyed God's command to eat there, resulting in his death (1 Kings 13).

This last example I gave is important because a lot of times we trust the word of man more than the word of God especially if it’s someone we respect and honor.

The command that God gives you is what you trust and believe. And sometimes we can allow the viewpoint of others to shift us from what He told us to do because we have a respect for them. But do not let respect cause you to miss and invalidate what God is doing.

God will use others to confirm the word He gave you but God will also allow others steer you in another direction to see if you will trust Him more! Will you have the discernment to know what to do and when to do it?

So, circling back to transition quickly. The way we ought to do it, in my honest opinion, is without thinking too much. Let me explain. I am not saying do not pray and ask God to confirm what He is saying, but certain things do not warrant the time for that. God gave you the unction to go talk to that person but your stalling will result in that person leaving by the time you make a decision. A transition is not always major, a lot of times it's something small. Because all it is, is moving from what one place or thing, to another. To shift, and make a move. Trust the God in you.

So when we transition we out to do it quickly because in this year of disruption we can leave ourselves vulnerable to the enemy if we don’t.

You have to have faith and trust. Trust that God will keep His word. That He will guide you and tell you where you need to go. And trust that no matter the outcome, that His will be done and not ours. So my question to you is this, do you trust God? And do you trust that you hear God for yourself?
