“In your patience possess ye your souls.” (Luke 21:19)

Jesus asked a powerful question: “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36).

While many people spend their lives managing their money, careers, and appearance, few spend time managing their soul. The soul is the seat of the mind, will, and emotions. It is where thoughts are formed, decisions are made, and feelings are experienced. Because the soul influences every area of life, Jesus commanded us to possess our souls (Luke 21:19).

If we are commanded to possess them, then we must recognize that our souls can be influenced by fear, bitterness, trauma, temptation, and unhealthy thought patterns.

One of the greatest threats to the soul is a stronghold—a mindset that resists God’s truth (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). Over time, wrong thoughts become wrong beliefs, and wrong beliefs become prisons. But God desires to break every stronghold and renew our hearts (Ezekiel 36:26).

How do we possess our souls? We steward them through God’s Word (James 1:21), prayer (1 Samuel 1:15), rest (Matthew 11:29), forgiveness, and abstaining from things that war against the soul (1 Peter 2:11). We also surrender our own desires for God’s will, just as Jesus did in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:39).

The enemy wants access to your soul because he knows it affects your purpose, peace, and spiritual strength. But God wants your soul healed, renewed, and fully under His authority.

Today, ask yourself: Who possesses my soul—God, or the pressures around me?
